How about a Slavery Memorial for Washington D.C.?

150 years ago, the 13th Amendment was ratified by the states to abolish slavery throughout the United States forever. We've just recently furthered our study of American Slavery through our viewing of Roots, and not so long ago were in Washington D.C. visiting memorials to some of America's great presidents and leaders and to those who served and paid the ultimate price for Freedom in America's 20th Century Wars. How about adding a Slavery Memorial to the U.S. Capitol? This is the suggestion of an editorial published in the New York Times on December 5th and in the Cleveland Plain Dealer on December 9th.

This is something that would complement the opening next year of the National Museum of African American History that you saw under construction at the corner across from the American History Museum near the Washington Monument.

What do you think? Would you favor such a memorial? Where would you think it should be placed in Washington D.C.? What would it show about Slavery?
